never say never.
on today's episode of wex wednesday, we're going to look at some rap lines that... well... ended up not really... holding much water.
one of them is quite possibly my favorite of all-time, and is one that i often play on during my super duper dj wex megamix pre-show hhk sets - which is the famous dre line in "express yourself". what made this one so utterly amazing is that it's not like he caught smoking weed in a dark corner of a club after saying "I still express, yo, I don't smoke weed or sess". no no no. he said that line and then named his solo album the fucking chronic!! and not just that... made this the cd!!!
i mean, holy shit. that's what i call taking a 180. but i guess, as history has shown, the good doctor has had a little trouble figuring out what he really wants. see #1 & #2, plus, helllloooo rakim, raekwon, helter skelter, etc!
anyhow... the 180's:
1. Dr. Dre "I still express, yo, I don't smoke weed or sess" on "Express Yourself".
2. Dr. Dre "Peep out my manuscript, you see that it's a must i drop gangsta shit" on "Deeez Nuuuts". then he dropped his 180 on "Been There Done That".
3. Chuck D "Never be a brother like me go solo" on "Welcome to the Terrordome". yup, you guessed it, solo record.
4. Nas/Jay-Z on everything they said on "Ether" & "Takeover". they hug now. and hang out. and trade transformers.
5. Pos "That's why the Native Tongues have officially been re-instated" on "Stakes is High". we wish.
there's like 9 billion more. what are they?

Great topic. But I don't know Wex -- I wouldn't count Pos' line as a total 180ºer. The JBs, De La, and Tip did do that "How You Want It We Got It" joint together in '98?, and whatever beef they had -- as expressed in "In Da Woods" ("That Native shit is dead, so the Stickabush is comin") was put aside.
Good call on the Chuck D line, that's the first one that came to mind.
I can't think of one right now, but I'm sure Jeru has some boast about not fucking his mind up with liquor... and we've all seen dude in action...
A case of a deliberate 180º turn: MCA on Sure Shot:
"I wanna say a little something that's long overdue / This disrespecting women has got to be through / To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends / I want to offer my love and respect to the end."
How about Busta's constant countdowns to the "apocolypse?" Such as on Everything Remains Raw, "There's only 5 years left!"
Yeah, he didn't have much to say after.
I think what he meant was "There's only 5 years left of me being tolerable!" (Okay, so he overestimated by about 2 years. Close enough.)
Busta's music did dropped off hard around the turn of the century. but i never held it against him. the way i look at it is, if i had lived with this belief that the world was really going to end on some certain date, and then it didnt, i woulda been so fuckin happy, i probably woulda been bumpin the sean paul party jams and passin the courvoisier too.
I remember Busta and Canibus being on MTV pre-Y2K talking about how on New Year's Day 2000, that some serious chaos was going to happen. And then...nothing. Silence. They never mentioned any of it after nothing happened! What a cover-up.
It turns out foxy brown isn't pregnant. does that count?
