sidekicks.

no... not the flip up email/im/phone/camera things that all the kids are using (full disclaimer: i had one 2 years ago).

wex wednesday's is talkin' about the robin's to the batman... the vanna white's to the pat sajak... the barney fife to the andy taylor, etc.

and i'm not at all looking to demean their contribution with the use of the term sidekick... at all. these guys were/are irreplaceable.

rap's greatest 2nd in charge:

1. Flavor Flav - Public Enemy (what, who'd YOU think would be first?!)
2. Vinnie - Naughty By Nature
3. Sen Dog - Cypress Hill
4. Spliff Star - Busta Rhymes
5. Lil' Cease - Biggie
6. Freaky Tah - Lost Boyz
7. Danny Boy - House of Pain
8. Money B - Digital Underground
9. E Love - LL Cool J
10.
Willie D - KRS-One

Weezy, old fellow, I think you got just about all of 'em. I was hoping I could call out that E Love one! I'm gonna cheat with this one offering:

Snoop to Dre, circa 1993.

Sen Dog is by far my favorite of all those sidekicks. He fills his sideick role so perfectly -- just echoing the hooks. "You better be READY!" "We ain't goin' OUT!" "Insane in the BRAIN!"

what??

i'm confused, who are you saying is the sidekick in the geto boys?? because they were clearly a GROUP, made up of 3 emcees who all contributed.

look at my list - THOSE are sidekicks. not dj's - not equal contributers.

Had to jump in here..

If Willie D, Big Mike, or Bushwick Bill ever heard themselves referred to as Scarface's sidekick, I think a royal rumble would break out.

If any member of the Geto Boys are a sidekick, then Phife is a sidekick, and Prince Poe is a sidekick, and Eazy E was a sidekick, and so on..

While I have yet to receive my "Sidekick Degree" from Devry, I feel I'm not going out on a limb by saying that a sidekick isn't when a group has a more popular member than another in the group.. When a 12 song album drops, 3 members in the group, 3 verses on each song, and they're all getting split up, that's a group.

A sidekick is when an established rapper has a co-hort.. Tonto to the Lone Ranger.. Mini-me to Dr. Evil.. Spliff Star is the perfect example.. You go to a Busta Rhymes show, he may not be advertised, but Spliff is on stage acting the fool hyping up the gathering... He may have a verse or two on a Busta album, but it's not "Busta Rhymes And Spliff Starr Present : The Big Bang"..

This is not an exact science... But there's rules to this shit people!

Sometimes, you just have to say "yup..those are sidekicks.."..

I'm on the fence about this one, but Skoob and Scrap Lover. Can we view them as Kane's sidekicks? They were at all his old shows and videos with the ill moves.. Can we get a ruling on this one Wex??

I think if you were to go with Skoob and Scrap, you'd have to go with G-Wiz and Trouble T-Roy, Heav's dancers. Maybe that's the topic for next Wedneday: Backup dancers!

So I guess way back when when I couldn't think of a sidekick, that was the way to go, huh? (Even though, I'd still go with my Snoop mention; I'm talking 'Chronic," pre-"Doggy Style" era. Some "Deep Cover" ish.)

sidekick to the Tipster. He only really asserted himself on Low End Theory, and of course after that there was no stopping him.

I agree that DJ can't be a sidekick.

But the line between affiliate, single-album guest (say, Shorty No Mas or Consequence), sideick, crew member, and hanger-on is difficult to parse.

Flavor Flav is the über-sidekick, of course. He is to Chuck D what the clock hanging around his own neck is to him: a crucial accessory.

Arsenio Hall - Eddie Murhpy (in Coming to America)

Let's see... anything else on my mind?

Nope.

Oops. Part of my message got truncated. Basically I said that if you're gonna include Sen Dog on your list, then how are you gonna beef when people pick other less prominent members of groups? Phife always seemed to me sidekick-ish, until Low End Theory.

2:25 AM
Blogger Russ the Bus said...

Same goes for Vinnie, Money B, and danny boy they're group co-members with Trech, shock G, and everlast respectively. they were without question the weaker half, but not sidekicks.
e love was a producer who got a lot of shout outs on tracks. so if Puffy wasnt a sidekick he wasnt either.
willie d.

these are the good ones:

flav, spliff star, lil cease, willie d (maybe, but then you could include anybody from BDP as KRS' sidekick), Dice Raw (never a coequal member with black thought), Outlawz aka "those whack rappers named after dictators", Trife Diesel, and The Archbishop Don Magic Juan.

that's not ten yet, but its all we really got.

Hallelujah Holla Back!

the reason i included Vinnie, Money B, and Danny boy is because they were not equal contributors to the group. sen dog too. these situations absolutely cannot be compared to groups like the geto boys.

but for the love of jah, diggedy, WHERE is weekend at diggedys?! we need a new topic of debate! this one is TIRED!! :o)

11:17 AM
Blogger Russ the Bus said...

the geto boys suggestion was a joke, wex, let it go.

but vinnie and money b are not sidekicks. they're weaker rappers. the difference between geto boyz and Naughty or Digital is that all three were CAPABLE of carrying tracks/albums/shows by themselves, not that they actually shared stage or track any differently. shock g and trech definately had better verses, but not that many more than money b and vinne (i really dont listen to enough house of pain to accurately comment on danny boy)

but if stregnth of artist is the issue and not volume then everyone who was ever on rocafella (except freeway and kanye) are sidekicks of jay or camron.

hmmmm,

What about everyone in Bodycount who's not Ice-T to Ice T?

In Kris Kross, was the "Mack Daddy" the sidekick to the "Daddy Mack"? or was it the other way around?

In the lame wannabe category, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park is talentless enough to drag down a band as awful as Linkin Park.

What about Joe C. (RIP) to Kid Rock?

Diggedy will appreciate this one:

The guy in Onyx who does the 2nd verse of "Slam".

damn, the hhk blog this week has closely mimicked the F-ing stock market - lots of volume and deterioration.

by the way, i've thought about this some more, and don juan is the very definiition of a sidekick, and among the most prominent technical sidekicks identified in this thread, so i expect the r-e-s-p-e-c-t deservedly coming my way for that. or else i'm going back on the DJ/sidekick attack. don't test me.
