they reminisce.

today we're going to take a stroll down memory lane (no nas).

wex wednesday's
is going to look at some of my favorite HHK moments thus far.

were you in attendance for any of these?

1. Tara performing Brooklyn Zoo. this was back at the old spot (Rothko). there was definitely something magical about those red walls. this was right
when HHK started to catch on and we started seeing capacity crowds. and it feels like Tara hit the stage right at that moment. carrying only a mic and a backpack, she bumrushed the crowd spewing the Dirty classic like it was her last moment on Earth. goosebumps.
2. Me & Tanya performing I Got A Man. honestly, i never really even liked that song. i MAY have had the cassingle. but that doesn't mean i liked it. or does it? but when she approached me to do that song with her, it felt like it could be a lot of fun to do. and i was right. to those of you that dont know, i'm TERRIBLE at memorizing lyrics. it's just one of those things. it takes me listening to a song 900 million times. so yes, i listened to "i got a man" 900 million times. there i said it.
3. Me & Diggedy doing the "but some reason they're not picked" show intro in March 2006. as you can see, my favorite HHK moments just involve me. ha. that intro was real fun though. and i liked that we got creative and tried to pull together songs nobody ever did. has anyone done any of those still??
4. Gerber doing Big Pimpin. i mentioned him on my other re
minisce post "where are they now?". but if you were one of the lucky few on-hand for that... well, you know you saw something special. dude was just out of control. had the girls grindin him, was garblin the words, and just didnt give a fuck (no shady). he was the one example of a really bad performance being really good (no run dmc).
5. Big Daddy Kane performing Big Daddy Kane. watch the video of it again. the footage of Diggedy flalling around like a maniac says it all. to have our hero on stage with us was second to none. the other special guest moments are all up there too... but that was the pinnacle to me. unless we got the entire wu-tang clan up there to do triumph... not much is beating Kane.
6. for the last ones, i'm just going to let the pictures to do the talking:

this is one of my fav HHK photos. was deephunk on some bob barket shit or what? i also spy a very young robert downey, jr.

was this the first dude to do the bushwick impression?? if so, kudos to you good sir.

robert downey doing woo-hoo for the first time. absolutely classic. look at him, he's crazed.

there's more... especially recently. the superfriendz scenario is top 10.

All great moments.

Some of my faves are definitely included in there.

I always loved the performance at Knitting Factory by the girl who did "Got It Made" dipped in gear from head to toe, with back-up dancers as well. Classic material.

Bar-none, favorite performance ever was K Dot's "Gimme Some More".. I've never seen a crowd fit so nicely into the palm of someone's hand before.

Holy shit, dudes: Y'all are psychic. I've been thinking this should be a Wex's Wednesday topic for months. Months I tell you!

That being said, here's my all-time favorite HHK moments, in no particular order:
--Lyrical Arsonist, as he was known back then, doing "Bombs Over Baghdad": I think that was his debut performance, and man was it insane!
--In his new identity, Axiom's "Passing Me By": The umbrella was genious.
--My homie, my stromie Goodwin doing "Hip-Hop": Dude hit the stage wearing his Anarchy t-shirt, which would fit right in with Dead Prez, and one of the all-time great moments of HHK for me was when he just took the lyric sheet and slammed it to the ground like he was really pissed. Knowing Goodwin, he probably was!
--Scooter doing "Simon Says": I mention this to him all the time, but I was right in the front row when he did that song and he had the slimmies following his commands: Yes, they were actually rubbing their (censored for any female bloggers that might come along)!
--Dashaun popping up on stage for Cappadonna's verse on "Daytona 500" with Gusto.

I don't wanna hog all the space on the Web site, but a few more:
--K-Dot's "Give Me Some More," which will probably be listed the most before it's all said and done.
--Donny D's "Luchini": Flawless. (actually, were these two back-to-back?)
--Suit's "Back That Azz Up"
--RDJ's "Woo-hah": I remember thinking, "Man, this HHK is really taking off if they're getting Academy Award nominees to come out!"

And because Wex did it, I'm gonna give myself props for being the first to break out with crazy prophylactics (Bonita Appelbaum). If you haven't seen it, that moment's actually been immortalized on canvas.

I think I was on-stage with Gerber to assist in that massacre. hehe. I've tried to contact the guy, but he won't return my e-mails or IM. Maybe wifey heard about the girls grindin' him and revoked his HHK privileges, haha!
See y'all tomorrow night.
Oh, I almost got shot on Monday night, for reals! So expect a lil more fire n' vengeance in my performance. check out my myspace blog for the details....

I can't believe no one has Dashaun and his cousin(?) doing Brooklyn's Finest. They were so in sync on that. And what about Axiom's Rosa Parks?

I also second Donnie D's Luchini and Suit's Back That Azz.

And of course, Suit and I doing jump around just because it brought two random ass people together through their love of Hip Hop.

Oh yeah, and RDJ's Woo Hah, simply for his intro... something about Octagenerians on the Upper West? Fucking classic!

That's what the blog is for Kev! REMINDERS!

But yeah, Dashaun and his boy (think his name is Chadwick) murdered BK's finest.

From the look on my face in that picture, I believe that was the night I had the audacity to do one of my favorite Redman songs "Pick It Up" and realized it's a hard ass song to do. Especially in front of a packed crowd on a stage. I was seriously pissed at myself. I was 5 seconds away from karate chopping myself in the temple like Rain Man.

dee, look at the tall guy with the scarf, third row center, he's feelin your pain.

that's why i love hiphop karaoke right there. No where else can garauntee such incredible showmanship as the performances we're reflecting on here, AND the highest of unintentional comedy on a consistant monthly basis.

love it.

see yall tonight.

I'm still very partial to the chick from Australia who came through and did "Everything's Gonna Be Alright," but here are some honorable mentions:

Paul's "Ill Street Blues"
Shawn J & Scooter's "Shook Ones"
Elizabeth's "Follow the Leader"
. . . there are SO many more!

I basically enjoy them all, and you can tell because I "act a fool" in the front row during the whole show. . . and tonight will be no different.

And yeah. . . Doni D.'s "Luchini" was immediately after I did "Gimme Some More," and I agree with Van. . . it was flawless.

that dude that did 'warm it up kane' last night, anthony? i'm bad with names, but that was the best big daddy kane outside of kane himself. incredible.

btw i still have the humpty dance stuck in my head from last night. had way too much fun with that.
great night

Elizabeth doing "Know The Ledge" -- am I right on that?

I loved K-Dot's "Gimme Some More", but I also remember Charlie's rendition fondly. He was about a bar off the beat, but he soldiered on gamely, and his little "with the cars and the big crib" joke at the end cracked me up.

"Luchini" always makes my night.

Oh, and as for personal moments, dropping "The Bizness" with my folks in the crowd was pretty sweet.

However, I tested uploading to my blog and it worked like a charm! I am not sure what is going on with the group thing, but somehow it must have worked. I’m curious as to what the deal is with that. In any case, Thank you so much!
