r.i.p. real to reel thursdays

long story short, diggedy and i have decided to discontinue our dj night, real to reel aka wex wednesdays at angels and kings. just got to be a little too hectic in our respective calendars... and we thought it best to let it go.

thanks to the good people at angels and kings who were kind enough to let us come in and spin. and thank you to those of you who came out and hung with us.

peace!

dj wex.

ps- the HHK crew has something else up our sleeves though, so stay tuned for that.

Weekend at Diggedys - Volume 25

So at this point, I'm on songs 73, 74, and 75 on this magical journey called Weekend at Diggedy's.

As I go into this folder o' mine, I am finding it more and more difficult to choose three tracks.

Part of the problem is that most of my "gems" are on cassette tapes that I have no ability to transfer to mp3 form.

Another part is that instead of feedback or discussions on the selections, I have Axiom text messaging me saying "Wex' PSA on hearing loss gets more love than Weekend at Diggs. Hahahahahahahaha!".

Sigh.

I don't do it for the comments kid! I do it for the kid in Anaheim who wrote me an e-mail saying "I almost quit my job, but then I realized I wouldn't have internet access to download your tasty treats! Keep on keeping on!"

And on that note, the choice cuts for this Friday, July 27th :

Jadakiss - "I Don't Care"
http://www.zshare.net/audio/28745026d7d851/

I think this song is dope. I don't care if you don't. Haha! The song is called "I Don't Care", and I just said "I don't care.". Hahahahahahahahahaha. Get it??

What?

Download it!

Wu Tang Clan - "St. Ides Commercial"
http://www.zshare.net/audio/2874541aba7499/

We here at Hip Hop Karaoke do not promote the consumption of alcoholic beverages. We also do not condone a day and age where a commercial about malt liquor from 13 years ago is better than 99% of the sh*t dropping today.

MF Grimm - "Bloody Love Letter"
http://www.zshare.net/audio/2874603bb8f0e6/

I can't remember if this was in a previous installment of WaD. I don't think so. But I'm not going back through 24 volumes to double check. If you haven't heard this song, I highly recommend downloading it. I mean, I highly recommend ALL the sh*t I post, but this is the type of song you put on a mix tape for someone that doesn't necessarily listen to Hip Hop.

Have a great weekend everyone.

If you see my tall doofy ass walking around Rock The Bells this weekend, say "hi" won't you?

Weekend at Diggedy's - Volume 24

Nice evening at Angels and Kings last night...

Always good to be able to sit down and build with you folks.

Then go play some Zhigge.

When I left at about 2:30am, and un-named HHK veteran was still in the process of trying to "close the deal." I hope all your dreams came true homey, and that the digits don't take you to a disconnected place.

On to the choice cuts for this Friday, July 20th.

Phil The Agony, Xzibit, Snagglepuss, and The Alkaholiks - "No Hand Outs"
http://www.zshare.net/audio/281874885383ba/

This song came out in the mid 90's. I had it forever on cassette, the sh*t broke somehow, and I finally found it online. Snagglepuss steals the show. Love his verse. Every time I listen to it I say "the cream of the land has arrrriiiiived" over and over again for weeks. My friends LOVE that. Nothing really more to say. It's a dope track. Download it! Or be like Dee Phunk and don't (ahhh the revelations that happen at Angels and Kings on a weekly basis)!

Redman - "Whateva Man" (Pete Rock remix)
http://www.zshare.net/audio/27764674d5e593/

Not the best quality - it's taken from Pete and Marley's Future Flavors show - but I know we have a lot of Redman fans out there. Man, I miss listening to good radio. I used to have a fresh TDK in my tape deck at ALL times, just ready to tape something the second it came on. Computers just ain't the same. Please to enjoy.

L Swift & Mr. Voodoo (of Natural Elements) - "New York Live Promo"
http://www.zshare.net/audio/27778293552b4f/

The HHK gang was discussing the crew last night, so I felt like throwing this up. We not only discussed the force that was Natural E, but also DJ Mayhem, Riz, Martin Moore the Superstar, and the whole NY Live, Club 89 (89.1) crew. Every Wednesday and Thursday. 10:30pm - 1am they laid the treats down for us kids. My Thursday nights were basically me in front of my radio from 10:30 - 5am, switching over to 89 tech 9 at 1am.

I

MISS

RADIO!

Have a good weekend peoples.

SEE YOU TONIGHT.

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

turn it down.

today's wex wednesday blog post is a PSA to you, my friends.

through the years of deejaying and constantly having headphones on... i can already tell my hearing is not as sharp as it should be. and i'm 27.

so, i was on the train this morning. and saw 2 people, each sitting 7-8 feet from me, whose earbud volume was so high that i could make out what song they were listening to. got me wanting to tell the world...

cheap earbuds are awful for your hearing. BAD. (i'm talking about the little white headphones that come with your ipods) don't use them. and IF you're going to use them, set your ipod's volume limiter to about 60%. do not blast them loud. do not.

IF that doesnt work for you b/c you dont feel like it's loud enough, and you still want earbuds, get noise canceling earbuds (noise canceling headphones help to block out outside noise, which competes with your headphone output, so that you can use a lower volume level on your player to hear the music. plus they just sound better) and SET YOUR VOLUME LIMITER TO 60%. the volume limiter is in your ipods settings.

but the best thing is to rock standard noise canceling headphones. like these:

http://www.turntablelab.com/dj_equipment/71/40/3501.html

and not any type of earbuds. but like some, i personally don't like bulky headphones for getting around, so i use noise canceling earbuds from sennheiser:

http://www.turntablelab.com/dj_equipment/71/40/17578.html

i know, these models are expensive. it's like eating organic versus macdonalds. they don't make it cheap/easy to do the right thing.

so, to sum up this PSA on premature hearing loss and to do the standard wex wednesday list:

1. turn down your headphone volume.
2. invest in high quality noise canceling headphones.
3. wear earplugs. whether it's at HHK or the subway platform.
4. give your ears a rest every now and then. silence heals.

Weekend At Diggedy's - Volume 23

Tomorrow night.

The reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeturn to the Knitting Factory.

Feels like it's been FOREVER.

Gotta feeling Saturday is gonna be a good one.

For the fans and press, please note : There will NOT be an appearance by 48 Hours tomorrow night. They will likely be in the club separately, but there is not a scheduled collaboration.

On to the choice cuts for this Friday, July 13th. WTF? It's Friday the 13th???

Alright. In honor of Jason, all the cuts today will be from masked men.

KMD featuring Busta Rhymes, Lord Jamar, and Sadat X - "Nitty Gritty" (remix)http://www.zshare.net/audio/26770200f75b86/

So I'm at my Uncle's friend's home about a year ago. Gathering of a lot of their friends, including a 19 year old upstart I had vaguely known when he was a simple 7 year old running around without a care in the world. So now, the kid looks like an extra from a Lupe Fiasco video. He barely remembered me (and I him), but his mom intro's us and of course does the obligatory "you guys might like the same music." He looked me up and down like I was some 55 year old retired school teacher from Long Island, and went back to what he was doing. Fine by me, until we later found ourselves the only 2 people in a room and I felt obligated to begin an awkward conversation. "So what kind of Hip Hop do you like?" I said. He replies "Underground stuff. You wouldn't know it." Now I'm sitting there laughing to myself, because mother f*cker, I am the underground. I said "Like who?" He says "Well, MF Doom.." I stop him and say "Yeah I like Doom. Are you a fan of his KMD stuff?" Stares at me, and says "Who is KMD?". Game over kid.

Ghostface - "My Guitar" http://www.zshare.net/audio/267773404cfffe/

I know the mask is off. But there was a time he had just a faded visage behind a black stocking. This is Ghost wilding out over George Harrison's "Guitar Gently Weeps." Please to enjoy.

DJ Honda feat The Gravediggaz (Poetic and Frukwan) - "We Run Shit" http://www.zshare.net/audio/26778414fc6d2b/
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a stretch. But I can't think of other masked men right now! They fit with the Friday, the 13th theme, though. Just download it!

See you all tomorrow night.

Weekend At Diggedy's - Volume 22

Was feeling very patriotic Wednesday afternoon, and so I saw Live Free Or Die Hard.

Guess what?

It sucked.

Understand something : Going in, I had NO expectations for this movie, let alone high ones. The character of John McLane is just something I enjoy watching. Stupid fun. The whole movie could have taken place in the middle of Central Park, with Bruce Willis playing acoustic guitar, eating a pizza pretzel in a tie-dyed shirt, occassionally stopping to toss a frisbee, and I probably would have given it two thumbs up. Basically, it would have to take an AWFUL movie for me to walk out disappointed. Well, if this wasn't awful, it's as close as you can be. I know everyone is giving it good reviews. 3 stars. All along the lines of "yeah, it's dumb, but dumb fun." Funk that. Without revealing much, or going into detail, this just didn't seem like John McLane. First off, the hung over, frazzled, NY cop has turned into some Euro-dressing head shaven officer. He looks like an action hero from 2025, which was never the point of the character. Sure there are lots of crazy action sequences. It was directed by the dude who did Underworld so it's gotta be good right?? Come on man. Did anyone like those f*cking movies? I don't need to see highways being blown up by missiles. I want to see this dude barefoot walking on glass. Most of the movie is McLane standing around watching computer geeks be computer geeks. The kid from the Mac commercial talks his computer jargon, then McLane says "In English please". HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Funny right??? Sigh. Haven't I seen this movie somewhere before? Jeeeeeez. This won't ruin anything, and yet, it explains the whole thing. There's a chase scene towards the end. McLane's daughter (the minute I found out they were involving one of his kids I knew I was in for trouble) is in a van with the bad guy. McLane's in the car behind surprising the villain. Daughter yells at villain "there's my dad!". She's so spunky, no????

I'm done. On to the choice cuts for this Friday, July 6th.

Network Reps featuring Shawn J Period, Tru Persona, and DJ Spinna - "Simplistic"
http://www.zshare.net/audio/259200468085f6/

Just a delightfully breezy summer track. You can't help but listen to this song and smile.

Missin' Linx - "Same Time"
http://www.zshare.net/audio/25920291a33c19/

Black Attack. Problemz. Kool Fashion aka Al Tariq. Every track I heard from this underground supergroup has been the same formula : dope beats, straight forward lyrics. Al Tariq is a beast on the mic. FYI. Cop God Connections. Then convert it to mp3 and send to me since I only have it on cassette.

Lords of The Underground - "Flow On" (Pete Rock remix)
http://www.zshare.net/audio/2592081e1c6049/

If you caught The Sopranos finale, that was Doitall from Lords Of The Underground at Holsten's during the legendary finale scene. I confirmed that rumor by going to his myspace page. It was during that confirmation that I was made aware of the fact that they are working on a reunion album. Guess who's excited about it? Yep. This guy. This is another Pete Rock remix spectacular. Flooooooooooooooow on flowwwwwwwwwwwwww on, on and on and on and on...

Hope your weekend is a good one.

Hip-Hop in Brooklyn

Friend of the family DJ Kevlar is proudly spinnin alongside Planet Asia and Tame One Tuesday night at Galapagos. Back when Oh the Newmanity! (aka Other Guy) had a car in the late '90s, he went through a mixtape phase and damn if Asia's "Kaleidoscope" wasn't on all of them. And will Diggedy remember putting That's Them in my hand and going, "You gotta hear this" back in school? The world may never know.
